This rather splendid little spider is known as a PUMPKIN PATCH TARANTULA (Hapalopus formosus) and is officially the smallest tarantula species I keep in my personal collection. It has a gorgeous combination of black, brown and bright orange markings and looks a whole lot nicer in the flesh than these pictures suggest!
The pumpkin patch tarantula originates in Colombia in South America and even the largest adults never reach more than four inches in length, which for a tarantula species is very small! They are keen burrowers but also spend plenty of time out of their burrow, making them a lovely display species.
